THE STORY
While Gabrielle Magid was in undergrad at the University of Florida, she realized that although there were mental health resources available on-campus, they seemed to be underutilized, and no one was talking about them. Real help seemed to be buried under stigma and bureaucracy that made everything worse. She knew the only way out was through and that a seismic culture shift was needed. With a little help from her friends and founding board members Skylar Warmund, Harrison Cady, and Allison Buenaga, Gabrielle worked to make this idea a reality; Stronger Than Stigma® was born in August 2013.
Not only would they aim to make it easier to talk about mental health and work to dissolve the stigma, they would strive to make it cool. The new “cool kids” would be the ones talking about mental health in the dining hall, checking in on one another after class, and creating new spaces where individuals could be seen and heard. The cool kids would make sure everybody knew: “You are not alone.”
A new take on advocacy & community was born. More than a decade later—and thanks to many volunteers, committed Board & Advisory Council Members, events, ideas turned realities, and real community-building later—we’re still here.
A message from our Founder & CEO: Gabrielle Magid
Hey y’all, Gabrielle here. I’m so glad you made it here. To this lil corner of the internet. And to this specific spot on the website. Now I get to welcome you to our movement!
When I was first starting out, I dreamed of having a community where I felt I belonged. I didn’t have that for the longest time. It made navigating my Anxiety/Depression diagnosis that much harder. I felt like an alien…one with a secret. I knew it shouldn’t be like that and that it didn’t have to be like that, but I couldn’t find a support system of people my own age who wanted to connect and have fun experiences that felt manageable on even my darkest days.
I always joke that getting a diagnosis is like being given a lifetime membership to an exclusive club you never wanted to join. We’re here now so might as well make the most of it, right? What if that club was actually the most supportive community of people who “get it” because they’d been through it, too? Or are currently going through it? Or love someone who’s been going through it? You want to engage with others, but you’re scared of being judged because you’re not on your A-game socially at the moment…I get it. I’ve been there. This is the complete opposite of that. Messy hair and sweatpants? Bring it. You’re wanted here; however you’re showing up in the world at the moment.
I’ve poured my heart and soul into Stronger Than Stigma®—I hope you can feel it—because I knew we needed it. We are a special breed of strong; we may have the bruises and scars leftover from the tumbles we took, but goshdarnit we’re all still standing. Welcome to #STS.
